A seedy story....

Once upon a time there was a girl who had far too many seeds....... in fact it is a problem for any keen gardener that you can not resist buying just a few more seeds.....!!!

So the seed situation is as follows.....

Pealing the......

I have set up the greenhouse a bit in an attempt to think that it was spring. I have put the table in which I have in every year and on top I put a mini plastic tunnel. Even though spring is late this year I have set up the thermometer so I can see what is going on and I have been really surprised.

The other day it was snowing, not completely dull, but pretty rubbish. It has warmed to -3° outside at 12.45 and there is a howling northerly wind and it feels really cold outside......but......inside the greenhouse it is 9°C and inside the little tunnel it is 14.5°C WOW!! I am going to redesign the tunnel to make it a bit bigger and put the onion and leek plants outside as I do not have enough window space inside any more  I will put a heat mat under them at night and cover the tunnel with a blanket to protect them a little more. I will closely monitor them!

So here are is the finished redesign and here is the pealing of onion the tunnel I do every morning...

Lots of micro-fleece piled on top and the planks I walk on in the green house leaned up to close the gap around the table edge:

Northern Lights, lighter days and lighting fires

Wow, Sunday night was amazing  I was going to bed early and just thought I'd check the satellite image from the space weather website   http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/pmap/pmapN.html and it lit up the screen. So I rushed out and had a look northwards, but there was still too much light in the sky but you could see it was a bit greeny. I waited up a bit and it started to improve. I put on more clothes, then some more until I had 4 coats, 3 hats and it really started to get good. In fact it was so good at this stage that my neck started to hurt looking up, so I got my "spark" (kick sledge) which has a seat on the front a blanket and sat down to enjoy the view. The whole sky was glowing green, the house a black silhouette in front of it all, then much to my surprise it got pretty spectacular. Not as good at the photos you see of it all, but you could see massive ribbons of green light rippling across the sky. It was pretty yellow and red at times also and really exciting! I also got a really good look at the "Arctic fox swishing it's tail", which is like white headlights swooshing across the sky. It even pulsed across the whole sky and I could imagine the the solar rays hitting our atmosphere and skimming across it's surface. It was truly a night to remember an worth every minute of the 3 hours I sat out in -10. I hope to see it again and we have talked about getting a tripod so we can take a long exposure photo......

Back to things of a more earthy nature! Our lovely WWOOFers had to leave because one of them had a job interview in Brussels and it is a long drive, but we hope they will be back at some point in the future! We managed to take off most of the panels on the back of the house and fix the doors on the second plastic tunnel as well as cook us a delicious cake (which I now have the recipe for!)

Visitors....

Well we have a WWOOFing family staying with us for a few days and they are all really nice. There is mum and dad and 4 year old and a baby of about 7 months. They come from Belgium and have been experiencing a Swedish winter for the past few months and helping out on a few farms.

Eino was very keen to help and he had fun picking off the flaking paint and plaster from the wall.....

Cold and warm

Well the temperature has plummeted outside and already the new floor is making a big difference! For the last few days we have had -21 in the morning but the house in the morning feels warmer than it has for a long time! I took the temperature in the half finished room just now and it was +7. I have not lit the fires in yesterday and today as there is so much exposed wood shavings exposed and we don't want to burn it all down before we even start using the room!

The first plank is put in!

Busy, busy, busy!

Well it is all getting rather exciting here.... the bottom boards have been fitted. They are plywood and have been screwed down to the supports underneath the beams. The joins have had more bits screwed over them, all the edges have been sealed....

Chips and wedges......

The other day they lowered the house but they were not happy with the fit so they lifted it up again and I managed to snap this shot of the floating corner of the house with the light poring in from the outside. It did not stay like that for long, it is now all tight again!
